It is the mission of Art Lab to:
- Raise students’ awareness of the importance of contemporary art and ideas
- Help students to find themselves as artists through the creation and discussion of art
- Help students to prepare for a life in the arts by enabling their interaction with people both inside and outside the art community

Art Lab is an intensive program at The Aldrich for juniors and seniors in high school who are interested in and who can benefit from experience in the visual arts. Students meet weekly at the Museum for nine months to explore issues in contemporary art, focus on possible career paths, and investigate their creative potential, while interacting with artists and art professionals. The focus is on giving students insight into the contemporary art world. Students meet with curators from the Museum and from New York galleries, meet and create work with contemporary artists in Aldrich exhibitions, review the work of their peers, and help to host Museum events. Projects vary from year to year, depending on the overall interests of the students in the program.
Art Lab has a limited number of openings for new participants each year, so it is important that the students applying possess a strong desire and commitment to achieve in the program. Therefore, each student must prepare answers to several questions about why he/she should be considered for acceptance.
A selected group of applicants to the Art Lab program will participate in an interview and a portfolio review (visual arts, performing arts, or writing). The Aldrich education department will notify those students regarding interview dates and times upon selection of their completed application.
Students should inquire about the possibility of receiving academic or volunteer credit from their school program. If that option exists, we will be glad to work with you and your teacher. |
