Teachers’ Summer Workshop

In the Minds (and Studios) of Artists
June 25 and 26, 2008

This summer The Aldrich will give area educators open access to artists. This two-day workshop will combine the best of our resources, beginning with a day-long tour of an artist’s studio and galleries in Chelsea, hosted by Aldrich curator Merrill Falkenberg. On day two we will present an all-day, hands-on workshop in the Education Center, led by exhibiting artist Paul Ramírez Jonas. 1.1 CEUs will be awarded to eligible participants.

Walking tour of artist’s studio and Chelsea galleries with Merrill Falkenberg. Wear your walking shoes for this insider’s view of important exhibitions in Manhattan’s galleries. If you have never been on a gallery tour with a curator, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Meet: Aldrich Museum Education Center
Hands-on workshop designed for teachers by exhibiting artist Paul Ramírez Jonas. Ramírez Jonas will continue to explore the loss of language, the fragility of archives, and the endangerment of primary texts in his installation, ABRACADABRA—I Create as I Speak, opening at The Aldrich on August 10, 2008.

Behind the Scenes for Educators

Area educators are invited to join Aldrich artists, curators, members, and Trustees for a private reception and sneak preview of the newly mounted exhibitions: Paul Ramírez Jonas: ABRACADABRA—I Create as I Speak; Peggy Preheim: Little Black Book; Huma Bhabha: 2008 Emerging Artist Award Exhibition; Karin Davie: In the Belly of the Beast. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Museum educators will be on hand to answer questions about school and teacher programs.

Teacher In-Service
Throughout the academic year, customized in-service sessions are offered at The Aldrich for teachers of all subjects and grade levels. Participating schools work with a Museum educator to determine a focus that meets their specific needs. Fees are based on the length of the program and the number of participants. Past topics include "Tackling Tough Topics using Contemporary Art," "Writing and Art," and "Building Critical Thinking Skills." Call the Museum to schedule at least one month in advance.

Teacher In-Service Fees: $125 per hour for up to 30 participants; $200 per hour for 31 or more participants.

Art & Writing Institute

The Art & Writing Institute, a biennial summer professional development symposium for K to grade 12 teachers, connects and advances the relationship between art and writing at the primary and secondary grade levels. This two-day symposium focuses on enhancing students' writing skills via the visual arts through various writing, hand-on, and discussion-intensive workshops. Topics covered include museum/school collaborations, poetry, critical writing, meeting state standards, and creative tools for connecting thinking and writing about art to everyday life. The next Art & Writing Institute will be held in the summer of 2009, CEUs are available.
