Catch of the Day!
Back to Aldrich Experience homepage
Both naturalist and artist, James Prosek is a superb flycaster, a master at catching trout. When the 2008 fly fishing season opens in Connecticut, you will have a date with Prosek to head for one of his favorite streams and both observe and join the master at work. But when the day is over, you will have a lasting memento of the occasion: Prosek will create a painting based on the catch of the day.
James Prosek is primarily known for his faithfully rendered watercolor paintings of birds and fish. His work is currently on view at The Aldrich in James Prosek—A Visual Taxonomy. In this exhibition, he has ventured into new mediums and formats to expand the conceptual underpinnings of his work. Paintings in oil on wall-mounted wooden boxes depict bird specimens as if they were just pulled from a collection drawer. And actual taxidermic birds, cleaned and prepared by the artist, are presented as works of art in Plexiglas boxes supported by metal posts. In addition, Prosek is also a celebrated author who has published seven books about fishing and one children's book about birds.
If you are a fishing fan, this is the opportunity to spend a day communing with nature alongside a modern-day master.
(Date to be mutually agreed upon. The Connecticut fly-fishing season opens on Saturday, April 19, 2008. No travel expenses are covered by this Experience. Please note: a 2008 Connecticut fishing license is required for any participant over the age of 16.)
