Gary Panter's work was first seen at The Aldrich in Pop Surrealism in 1998, but a major solo exhibition, Daydream Trap, will open in March 2008.  Despite the myriad aspects to his work, the category at which Gary Panter probably sits securely atop is that of most successful artist you don't know.  Children and parents of a certain age know and love Pee Wee Herman's talking chair; that's Panter's creation.  Underground “comix” of the sixties paved the way for today's comic 'zine culture; Panter was a fore-runner.  Interactive Internet animation is an everyday attraction for today's youth; Panter created one of the first of these strips.  Gary Panter's career as a comic artist, illustrator, painter, and musician has spanned thirty years.  Known amongst the cognoscenti for his key role in the transformation of the underground comics movement into the genre of the modern graphic novel, Panter—possibly the most influential graphic artist of his generation—has maintained a base in the worlds of both commercial and fine art.
